Discover more about this amazing botanical and it’s skin benefits below.
What is Sea Buckthorn?
Sea buckthorn, also known as sea berry, is a shrub native to Europe and Asia that produces edible berries. It is used in traditional medicine and has been studied for its potential health benefits, including its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Topically, sea buckthorn oil is a powerful skincare ingredient, with incredible benefits such as:
repairing and rejuvenating
providing hydration
reducing inflammation and redness
promoting collagen production
balancing serum production
No wonder we're obsessed with it!
There are two types of sea buckthorn oil that you will find in skincare: the fruit oil and seed oil. The fruit oil is pressed from the fleshy pulp of the berries; the seed oil is extracted from the seeds. Both oils are nutrient-dense and incredible for the skin.
The pressed, unprocessed fruit oil is an unmistakable dark red or orange-red; the berries are also the single highest vegetal source of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, unsaturated fatty acids, and essential amino acids along with beta carotine. Due to the concentration of the color, it often results in most of our formulations donning a yellow-ish or orange hue, depending on the product.
We especially love the fruit oil because it not only includes omega 6 and omega 7 (a fatty acid that's responsible for skin repair and rejuvenation), but it's also quick to absorb while soothing inflammation and redness.
Sea Buckthorn for Youthful Skin
Sea buckthorn has been used for centuries to help maintain youthful skin. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, this botanical is known to be effective in improving the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It helps to nourish the skin and increase its elasticity, making it look firmer and more youthful.
Due to its essential fatty acid profile as mentioned above, sea buckthorn also helps to reduce inflammation, redness, and irritation. This magical berry can also help to lighten scars and dark spots, resulting in a brighter, juicier, and vibrant complexion. Yes, please!
Sea Buckthorn for Acne
In recent years, sea buckthorn has become increasingly popular as a natural acne remedy—and for good reason.
The oil is filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids that help reduce inflammation, unclog pores, and naturally balance and potentially reduce oil production, resulting in less severe acne.
It also helps maintain sebum balance and reduce the appearance of acne scars.
Sea Buckthorn for Reducing Hyperpigmentation
Sea buckthorn is a highly effective remedy for hyperpigmentation. Vitamins A, C, and E, as well as essential fatty acids and antioxidants, all found inside the fruit oil, help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, reduce inflammation, and protect the skin from environmental damage.
In addition, sea buckthorn oil has been found to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which help to plump the skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots.
The oil may potentially help to decrease the production of melanin, which is responsible for darkening the skin.
All of these factors make sea buckthorn an incredibly powerful tool in the battle against hyperpigmentation.
